A 16-hour siege in Australia_s largest city has ended in dramatic fashion. Early Tuesday morning heavily armed police stormed the Lindt Cafe in Sydney_s busy financial district using flashbangs and smoke grenades to enter the shop where 11 hostages were being held. Gunfire and explosions were heard as an Australian SWAT unit fought their way inside. Early reports indicate that two people – one hostage and the gunman – were killed. A handful of others were injured. The gunman is believed to be an Iranian man who received political asylum in Australia in 1996. 49-year-old Man Haron Monis – a self-proclaimed sheikh – took the hostages on Monday just before 10 AM local time. He was out on bail while facing a number of charges including sexual assault. Haron Monis had a long history of politically-motivated crimes on his record. Authorities believe he was acting alone. In Japan the ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has won a two-thirds majority in a referendum vote. Abe_s Liberal Democratic Party had called the snap election to delay a scheduled tax increase and to gain support for his economic reform policies popularly known as Abenomics. Abe took office in 2012 and pledged to revive the nation_s struggling economy. His strategy of raising public spending and printing money provided an initial burst of growth but Japan slipped back into recession in the second half of 2014. After winning the vote Abe said his government would not become complacent and that his Abenomics policies are still only halfway done. And Oil prices have fallen forty-percent this year hitting a five-year low – and they COULD fall even FURTHER. Over the weekend an OPEC member from the UAE says the cartel won_t cut oil production even if prices dip to forty dollars per barrel That kind of sentiment doesn_t bode to well for the short term price which is trading in the 60 dollars per barrel range. So how does that translate to prices at the pump? In some parts of the US gas is selling for under 2 dollars a gallon. Merry Christmas
