She_s been following the story of a brutal rampage in Afghanistan that has shocked the world. What_s going on Natasha?NO) It_s not a pretty picture Eila. 16 innocent Afghans are dead including women and children after an experienced US soldier went house to house on a shooting spree. EA) And do we know WHY this happened? NO) Not yet, many of the details are still unknown but what we DO know is that this was the soldiers 4th tour of duty and for some reason, he snapped. EA) And there are some serious ramifications aren_t there?NO) That_s right, president Hamid Karzai (haw-MIHD kahr-Z-EYE) has weighed in as have the Taliban. Here_s the latest Eila.NO) US officials are trying to find a motive after an American soldier went on a bloody house-to-house rampage, killing 16 civilians. Not much is known about the alleged shooter so far, other than the fact that he_s an Army Staff Sargeant who was apparently acting alone and turned himself in. The sergeant, in his mid-30s, had served several tours of duty in Iraq, but was new to Afghanistan. The Taliban took no time to call out American forces as sick-minded savages and swore revenge for the killings. Afghan president Hamid Karzai (haw-MIHD kahr-Z-EYE) called the massacre unforgivable. This comes just weeks after riots erupted over the burning of Korans by U.S. troops.In other news from the rergion, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan (KOH-fee ANN-nan) says he_s optimistic that a peace deal can be made in Syria. This despite 2 days of talks with Syrian president Bashar al-Assad (bah-SHAHR ahl AH-sahd) that failed to yield any results. After the meetings, Annan said that finding a peace process would be difficult, but he held out hope. Complicating the issue in Syria is the fact that many opposition leaders refuse to open a dialogue with al-Assad, claiming he_s a war criminal. They also claim that any meetings that he agrees to are simply to buy time before any outside intervention takes place.Elsewhere in the Middle East, for a fourth straight day, Israeli airstrikes pounded the Gaza strip, injuring at least 40 people. Israel says they_re targeting rocket launching sites as more than one-hundred have been fired from Gaza since Friday. It_s the most intense fighting in the region in months, forcing 500-thousand Israelis into shelters. Schools have also been closed as a precaution Eila. EA) Between this, Syria, Iran and Afghanistan, that area of the world is pretty scary these days. NO) You_re right and the unfortunate part is that there doesn_t seem to be any end in site in ANY of the conflicts.
