VS) Newly elected President Francois Hollande (frawn-SWAH oh-LAWND) has officially been given the reigns of French leadership. Hollande was sworn in at the Elysee (EL-ee-zay) Palace in central Paris, becoming the country_s first socialist President in seventeen years. Topping the agenda for his five-year term? Hollande will soon select a prime minister, and German-speaking Jean-Marc Ayrault (ay-RO) is thought to be the frontrunner for the job. Makes sense, considering that Hollande is set to visit Berlin to discuss debt resolution and austerity measures with German chancellor Angela Merkel. (an-GAY-lah MAIR-kul) Now to some breaking news in the News of the World phone hacking scandal. London_s Metropolitan Police have charged Former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks and her husband Charlie with perverting the course of justice. With the latest on the scandal in London, we_ll turn things over to Natasha Olenski. NO) Vic, the former head of Rupert Murdoch_s newspaper empire is accused of concealing evidence from Scotland Yard detectives, including sensitive documents, computers, and other electronic data. Along with Brooks and her husband, four others have also been charged. They include Mrs. Brooks personal assistant, chauffeur, and News International_s head of security. The six accused are the first to face formal charges since the police investigations began last year. Brooks and her husband have released an official statement Vic, saying they quote deplore the weak and unjust decision. Back to you. VS) It_s already been a long investigation Natasha, but it sounds like we_ve only touched the tip of the iceberg here.NO) That_s right Vic, it seems that over the past year or so there_s new accusations and evidence brought forward each week. These charges are a definite escalation though so don_t expect any sort of resolution anytime soon. We_ll wrap up this first look at the news with the European Union naval forces who_ve taken the fight against Somali pirates to the air. On Tuesday, helicopter and aircraft strikes off Somalia_s central coastline targeted pirate speed boats, fuel depots, and weaponry, marking the first air attacks against pirate targets on shore. No injuries or deaths were reported in the assault. The EU has been the biggest contributor to Somalia_s transitional government, and has provided government troops with funding, training and supplies to combat the problem. The headlines continue a little later but right now Erica Stevens joins us with a sneak peak at what else we_ve got coming up.
