Our top story today takes us to Italy where another devastating earthquake has struck the northern part of the country. NO) This is in the same area that was rocked by a similar earthquake just last week. Here_s the latest. 1. NO) At least 12 people have been killed by a 5-point-8 magnitude earthquake that struck the Emilia region of northern Italy. Rescue teams are scrambling to pull survivors out of the many collapsed buildings. The quake has left many historic buildings in ruins. EA) Making matters even worse is the fact that aftershocks continue to shake the region. There have been at least 40 of them since the quake struck early Tuesday. Apart from the toll on its people, the earthquake will likely also impact the country_s economy. Northern Italy is known as the heart of the nation_s manufacturing industry.2. NO) Unfortunately that_s not the only tragic news we have to report today. In Qatar (kah-TAR), a massive fire at a popular shopping mall in the country_s capital has claimed the lives of at least nineteen people. The exact cause of the blaze is unknown, but it_s believed to have started in the mall_s day care center.EA) The fire broke out at around 11 am local time. Firefighters who arrived on scene were unable to get to those trapped by the blaze in time. Some of the survivors have been critical of the rescue efforts, saying that emergency workers didn_t arrive on scene until long after the fire was underway. 3. NO) Turning now to the fallout from last week_s shocking execution-style violence in Syria. A number of Western states have condemned the incident, and are now responding by ousting Syrian diplomats from their borders. The UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, Spain and Italy have all asked Syrian officials to leave. EA) Meanwhile the UN has confirmed that over one hundred people were executed in the town of Houla last Friday by pro-government troops. Eyewitnesses say that soldiers went from house to house and opened fire on defenseless civilians. It was the most vicious round of violence since the uprising there began fourteen months ago. Syria_s government says it was not behind the attacks, and blames the incident on terrorist groups. And that_s your first look at the news.
