President Barack Obama has announced a series of 23 executive actions in an attempt to curb the wave of gun violence blanketing the US. He also called on Congress to re-instate a ban on military-style assault weapons, ban magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition, and to approve universal background checks on anyone purchasing a gun of any kind. Those checks would include private sales, auctions, and even gun shows.Even before the President_s speech, gun lobbyists had been voicing their displeasure over tougher gun rules. In particular the National Rifle Association, which has released a controversial commercial aimed at the Presidentis family.For his part, the President did not address the attack ad. Among the executive actions announced Wednesday was the nomination for a director for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. Obama is also directing more resources to be used for mental health issues, and the causes and prevention of gun violence. Now here_s Laura Conner with what ELSE is in the news today.
