With the tragedy in Newtown Connecticut hanging over the U.S., several high-profile dignitaries descended on the town to offer their condolences. This included President Obama, who took to the airwaves on Sunday night to console a nation in mourning. With more, here_s Eila Adams. Vic, in an emotional speech, the President pledged to take action to prevent more gun-related tragedies in the future, saying quote, We can_t accept events like this as routine. In addition to personally naming the victims of Friday_s shooting, Obama praised the faculty at Sandy Hook Elementary School, as well as Newtown authorities. Meanwhile, police have confirmed that the killer – 20-year-old Adam Lanza – used a Bushmaster assault-type rifle to literally shoot his way into the school. It appears the weapon, as well as several others brought to the scene, belonged to Lanza_s mother Nancy, who had been gunned down earlier that same day. Lanza had no criminal record, and most statements taken from those who knew him say he was a quiet, normal, young man with no history of violent activity. And not surprisingly, Vic, the tragic incident has also fanned the flames on the national gun control debate.If not now, then when? I understand that California Senator Dianne Feinstein has pledged to introduce new gun control legislation early next year. That_s right. The bill would ban the sale, transfer, transportation, and possession of certain firearms, including assault weapons. In many ways it sounds similar to the assault-weapons ban that was repealed in 2004. A landslide election victory saw the conservative-leaning party claim 294 seats in the 480-seat lower house of parliament. Prime Minister-elect Shinzo Abe says his main goal will be to repair the country_s fragile economy. Votes are being counted in Egypt_s new constitutional referendum, with early reports suggesting the document will be passed. Although President Mohammed Morsi staunchly endorses the constitution, many detractors believe it_s both poorly drafted and far too pro-Islamist. Official results aren_t expected until later in the week.The U.S. Defense Department is sending patriot missiles to Turkey in a bid to protect its borders from possible Syrian attacks. Several hundred American troops will also be deployed to the region, which has seen a steady decrease in stability since the Syrian conflict began 20 months ago. We_ll be right back.
