Officials say one of the buildings was 20 stories tall one was 10 and the smallest was 3 or 4. No cause has been determined but itis believed that the collapse was due to structural problems. Riois mayor said that estimating the number of casualties would be pure speculation at this point although at least 5 people were injured. Since this happened in the dead of night itis expected that the buildings would have been mostly deserted. This calamity comes as Rio is preparing for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics.The owner of a French company that makes breast implants has been arrested amid safety concerns. Jean-Claude Mas (MASS) founder of the now-defunct company P.I.P. is being held at his home while police investigate. His company is accused of using low-grade silicone in breast implants that have a high risk of rupturing and leaking. Itis believed that up to 400-thousand women in 65 countries may have the at-risk implants. Mas apparently told police that he ordered his staff to hide the sub-par silicone from inspectors. He also claims that the silicone is perfectly safe and says that anyone filing a claim against him over the implants is simply in it for the money.Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard (GIH-lahrd) had quite a scare in Canberra (CAN-bare-ah) as she had to be literally pulled to safety by security staff. Hundreds of angry protesters had surrounded a restaurant where she was handing out medals in commemoration of Australia Day. However itis believed that opposition leader Tony Abbott not Gillard was the target of the protests. He had made disparaging comments about the Aboriginal Tent Embassy n a group of Aborigines who have lived in tents on the lawn of Parliament House for 40 years. Gillard lost a shoe in the incident but was otherwise unharmed. Timothy Geithner GITE-ner may be the US Treasury Secretary but heis not expecting to hold onto the job much longer. In a new interview with Bloomberg TV he strongly suggested his days would be numbered if President Barack Obama gets reelected. His exact words? ìIim confident heis going to have the privilege of having another Secretary of the Treasury.i That about sums it up Although Geithner has occupied the post since 2009 he nearly stepped down last August after Congress reached an agreement to raise the U.S. debt ceiling.And weill close out in the Middle East where exploratory talks between Israeli and Palestinian negotiators are officially over. The goal of the meetings n which took place over several weeks in Jordan n was to find a mutually acceptable way to set up official peace negotiations. Unfortunately both sides were unable to get past several sticking points including Israelis refusal to stop building settlements in occupied areas.
