VS) It_s a BIG day in the news business because something HISTORIC is happening right now in Egypt ES) For the first time in recorded history, Egypt is holding truly democratic elections VS) Here_s what we know so far. VS) Over 50 million Egyptians are eligible to vote and as expected, line-ups across the country are LONG. As Erica just mentioned, these are the very first free elections the country has ever held in it_s 5000 years of existence. 30 thousand volunteers are helping the voting process, which is taking place on Wednesday and Thursday. If no clear winner emerges, a run off election will be held on June 16 and 17. ES) There are roughly a dozen candidates in the running and surprisingly, many voters are backing Mubarak veterans in the hope that they can restore stability in a country besieged with rioting, rising crime, and a failing economy. Others are throwing their support behind the Muslim Brotherhood – which worries some who fear a nation run under strict Islamic law. VS) Elsewhere in the middle east, western officials are meeting with Iran once again over their nuclear program. This is a follow-up after last month_s negotiations between Iran and six countries over their controversial ambitions. An official in Baghdad, where the talks are taking place, seems cautiously optimistic. He says that Iran is being offered confidence-building and reciprocal proposals in order to reach a deal.ES) Thus far, the West has reacted with much stricter measures, including a string of tough sanctions. This all comes a day after the International Atomic Energy Agency announced that they expect to come to a deal with Tehran to allow broader inspections of their nuclear facility. Iran insists their nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.VS) Regulators are taking a good, long look at financial services company Morgan Stanley – the company that underwrote Facebook_s Initial Public Offering. It_s being reported that a Morgan Stanley analyst reduced his revenue projections ahead of the IPO. He then shared that information with several key investors.ES) The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority is now looking into concerns that some information should have been disseminated more widely, rather than to just a few key investors. The IPO hasn_t been smooth for the Social Network. Since launching on the Nasdaq last Friday, shares have dropped from 38 dollars to 31 dollars.
